Yes. I was outside raking and pruning our orchard trees on Sunday. With a frigid North wind blowing, on a day that did not go above -12.
Sometimes, it feels necessary to attempt the illusion that I have some control of things. That simply by doing Spring-like things, I will tempt this elusive season out from it's hiding place.
Because frankly, all the things that make Winter feel warm and cozy in the beginning are wearing thin. The wood stove fires, the layering of clothes. Even the soups and stews that I love in December are replaced with a strong want of anything that is not cooked at all.
These pruned branches of plum and cherry are sitting in water. They will bloom inside long before they will outside. And while their pink blossoms will be forced, they will help bring the reality of Spring days closer.
