'Hurry up and wait' is about how I would sum up the sap collecting so far this year. There have been many good days when the sap flows. However, the pattern seems to be that they are followed quickly by days that possess a very January-like kind of frigid quality. As it stands, our holding tank sits with approximately 40 gallons of frozen solid sap. And while I may not be overly-confident in my syrup making abilities, I do know that block will not be thawing out anytime soon.
Our plan B looks much more like our process of 2016 - the tried and true bucket storage system. Currently our bucket stash is barely avoiding the same fate as that inside the holding tank. Turns out that it is a lucky thing I have such a healthy wool blanket collection. Each night the bucket pile gets tucked in under the aforementioned blankets with the hopes of keeping frozen sap at bay. Secretly, I am taking this as permission to keep on with the blanket hoarding.
Learning as we go is what we do here. Flying by the seat of our wool blanket pants. :-)
Have a great weekend all.
